I’d say we are past midsummer and headed in the home stretch to Autumn. Once again, I can’t believe it. Where does the time go? Well, this summer it has been going at MSR’s SummerScape. I’m working as on-site director and JW has been attending camps every week. It has been very interesting for me, learning about the innner workings of MSR and getting to know the staff better. I have also had fun getting to know a lot more of the kids. JW and I are usually up by 6 AM and at school by 7 or 7:30 — after a ritual trip to Bruegger’s bagels. I enjoy our little rituals. Jackson enjoys riding on the ‘rolly’ cart as I deliver snacks to all the camps. I think it has been good for him to kind of have the run of the campus this summer. I got to eat lunch with JW several times and meet some of the school’s younger kids, which was fun. This time also had some very sad news. The little girl that Jackson and I honored at St. Baldrick’s passed away. Dana and I attended the funeral, which was beautifully moving, but also very sad. Jackson only has one and a half more days of first grade left. I’m starting to sound like a broken record, but I can’t believe it is already over! Where did this year go? My little boy will be a second grader and he’ll be seven in less than two weeks. It’s crazy. I feel like he has had a great year. I am very pleased with his progress at MSR. And more importantly, he is very happy there. He told me the other day that he loved his school and wanted to stay there until he was a teenage. That’s awesome!
I also can’t believe that I’ve been working there a year. I’ve really enjoyed it. I’ve made a lot of good “little” friends. I’ve enjoyed making the short films and teaching the book publishing class. It’s really been a “full” year. Sometimes I feel like I’m not getting things done that I’d like to because I’m so busy, but I guess I need to realize that I have actually accomplished a lot. I coached soccer at the Y in the Fall and the Spring. I did some substituting at MSR. Was on the Gala marketing committee. Took a positive parenting class. And I will be on-site director of MSR’s SummerScape program.
I have enjoyed being on campus more and being involved with JW’s school. Even though our evenings are a little hectic at times, I’m glad that I can work a job that allows me to see JW whenever I want. I think Jackson has enjoyed it too. Some highlights of this year were getting to have lunch with JW in his classroom, Jackson getting a trip with Dana to Washington DC, spending more time with Jackson in the evenings, watching JW overcome some hurdles in his class work, Jackson getting good at riding his bike, watching JW gain confidence in a lot of little things (i.e., tree climbing, driving the lawn mower, reading, Phonics boxes, etc.) I’m proud of my son. Here’s looking forward to a great summer!

Take a look at my last entry and that should tell you how fast this summer went by. This has to be the fastest summer I’ve ever experienced. It really, really blows my mind. And I’ll have to say that I’m a little sad that it is over.

He had a great time riding the horse with Delaney, the four-wheeler with Dylan and seeing all of Dylan’s “pets.” We went to stay with Pappy and visit his cousin Bill, in Roaring Gap. Then it was back to camps. Luckily, the first camp was only from 1pm to 4pm at MSR. So, we had the morning to swim or play. Dana really wanted Jackson to learn to bike this summer and he did, so we’d try to get in a ride every now and then. The next camp was another all day camp at MSR. Jackson started requesting Chic-fil-a for breakfast, so we’d go get it and drive to MSR and he’d eat before his camp.
Somewhere in here, we made a trip to visit Pappy at the beach and the Ramie’s from Nashville. Moses caught a shark right on the beach. JW had a lot of fun playing in the water and with Thomas and Parker. Back in Raleigh, the camps continued with mornings at MSR and afternoons at RLT — which really split the day up. “School’s out for summer… school’s out for ever!” As a kid, I couldn’t wait to hear the radio station play that song. I can’t believe this school year has come and almost gone. Over the past year or so, I've been really interested in the WEB 2.0 movement. I've always been excited about the web and its possibilities, but I think there is a lot more to come. Last night, I came across a site called Web2list.com and it has a ton of info and links for Web 2.0 sites. I am trying one right now. It is called WriteToMyBlog and it is an online wordprocessor that publishes straight to your blog(s). It has features to make it easy to add Flickr and YouTube content. It also gives you the ability to publish the same post to many blogs, which is something I've been looking for.

A few weeks back, I get this very interesting email asking me if I was interested in submitting the movie to a new film festival in Nairobi Kenya. I was flattered, but a little taken aback. When I think of Africa, I think of safaris and the Sahara desert — tribesmen hunting wild game in the bush. But I found out that I am very ignorant of the real Africa, especially the real Nairobi Kenya. So, I started doing a little research to try and learn more about Nairobi. As it turns out, Nairobi is a large metropolitan city, some three million strong. Not that I would be opposed to showing ELVIS’ GRAVE in some small village in the middle of the African desert — that might be fun!
But what really gave me a clue that I wasn’t dealing with some out-in-the-bush tribes person, was the email correspondences that I received from a very bright young lady named Mildred. Mildred is the head of the film festival and an extremely funny person with a wonderful spirit. She is a real go getter. It is amazing that a half a world away you can get the sense of her spunky personality through email. She has definitely won me over with her positive attitude and I have pledged my support in helping her in anyway that I can. I hope I can meet her in person some day and maybe she can educate me in Kenyan culture. Goodness knows I could use some educating.
The festival is called ROFFEKE. Which is Swahili for friend. The ROck and roll Film Festival Kenya. Stay tuned for further developments.
